For A Book a Day, we created a visual identity rooted in clarity, optimism, and access, values that mirror the organization’s mission to expand literacy and lifelong learning in underserved communities. At the center of the system is a custom-built typeface constructed from basic geometric shapes, with letterforms intentionally designed without counters. The result is a bold, open alphabet that feels direct and inclusive, simple enough to be inviting, yet distinctive enough to stand on its own.
We brought the identity to life with bright primary colors, tapping into the visual language of early learning while avoiding anything overly precious or didactic. Subtle textures were layered throughout the system to introduce a handmade quality, reinforcing the care, thoughtfulness, and human touch behind every book A Book a Day distributes. Together, the color, texture, and type work as a flexible toolkit, playful and expressive, yet grounded and purposeful.
A Book a Day is a West Philadelphia–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit led largely by first-generation immigrant women who are deeply committed to educational equity. Since 2014, the organization has distributed more than 10,000 thoughtfully selected books to young readers across Philadelphia, with a focus on Title I schools and community-centered institutions. The identity reflects this mission by elevating marginalized voices, celebrating curiosity across disciplines from art and music to poetry and science, and supporting public education as a pathway to independence, empowerment, and civic life.
