Enjoy the view: I, Must, Confess, I, Still, Believe: Six Thousand Google Results explores the fluid nature of word meanings as indicated by the endless and ever-changing images associated with them. Words and images have specific meanings dependent on cultural events, political climates, etc. The words “I,” “Must,” “Confess,” “I,” “Still,” “Believe” were googled resulting in over 6000 image results. The resulting images were presented in proportion to the size of their digital files, individually cut and pinned to a wall. For every installation of the piece, it is essential that a Google search is done as close to installation date as possible in order to reveal the words’ truest “meanings.” Images were grouped together based on word search and organized in “sentence” form. Visually, the result is a topographic map of meaning for that specific moment in time.

The Banal, the quotidian, the obvious, the common, the ordinary, the infra-ordinary, the background noise, the habitual? How are we to speak of these common things, how to track them down, how to flush them out, wrest them from the dross in which they are mired, how to give them meaning, a tongue, to let them, finally, speak of what it is, who we are.* Through being photographed, something becomes part of a system of information, fitted into schemes of classification and storage which range from the crudely chronological order of snapshots sequences pasted in family albums to the dogged accumulations and meticulous filing needed for photography’s uses
